What bridges them is the all-encompassing focus on mood and feel. Consider the folksy charm of Beth Orton or the downtempo vibe of Morcheeba to the scintillating rhythms of UNKLE. But that restlessly experimental approach to production is where trip-hop thrives.Īs a genre, it lives somewhere between breakbeats, downtempo jazz and acid house with psychedelic influences. The band’s Robert “3D” Del Naja spent so much time tweaking sounds in the studio that the group nearly broke up. “They’re not brothers but distant cousins that share the same production values.”Īs legend has it, Massive Attack’s recording process was arduous on Mezzanine. “Hip-hop has more of a message and conveys freedom of expression. “Electronic music is more on the floor with the goal of making people dance,” says Subtle Blend founder Mario Anzola. The event puts a focus on producers playing live sets with mostly analog gear in front of original visuals (this week by Kazuya Toi Whakairo Ito). Subtle Blend’s next event is Friday (September 13) at the Rivoli and features locals Elaquent, Pursuit Grooves, 2nd Son and CY, who carry Massive Attack’s spirit of genre-less experimentation in the studio (or laptop). club sounds – also keep the sounds alive, if not explicitly. Events like Kensington Market’s Architextures and the Shop’s Innit – which brings together Toronto hip-hop and U.K.

Genres that, prior to Massive Attack, might have sounded disparate now frequently intermingle at Toronto parties like Subtle Blend, a showcase of electronica, jazz and hip-hop. act’s dark cinematic masterpiece that elevated the genre to high art, embracing rock and dub influences and bringing sounds of the 70s to a modern audience. Long considered the quintessential trip-hop album, 1998’s Mezzanine was the U.K. But for some local acts, it remains a source of inspiration.Īs Massive Attack finally reach Sony Centre on Tuesday and Wednesday (September 17 and 18) as part of their long-awaited Mezzanine XX1 tour (initially scheduled for March but postponed due to illness), the genre still reverberates in Toronto. The often misunderstood genre helped coalesce rave and hip-hop subcultures, though its impact has largely been forgotten by a broader audience.

PLEASE FIX this bug!! And please allow us to “unclaim” or turn off the rewards so our heroes will go back to normal.MASSIVE ATTACK presents Mezzanine XX1 featuring Liz Frazer, Horace Andy and others, Tuesday & Wednesday (September 18 & 19) at Sony Centre (1 Front East), 7 pm, all ages. I really don’t want to restart the game for a 3rd time. I really loved this game when I first started playing it, but this has made me want to stop playing. Bad idea! AGAIN, my primary pistol damage reset back to as if my hero was level 1 (and my hero is actually upgraded to Level 41)!! This was extremely disheartening, and now I may be forced to delete the app AGAIN and start over AGAIN. I eventually built my way back up to a high stage and high hero level, and decided to give the AK Laser daily reward a try. I had to delete the game and restart all the way from the beginning. Now I’m at a high stage and my pistol has reset to basically 0 damage, because I claimed the shotgun. Up until this point, I had massively upgraded my hero and beat many stages. Overall, don’t waste your time, there are similar games out there that don’t have these issues.ĭO NOT claim the daily rewards such as the Shotgun and AK Laser because they will nuke your primary pistol, and you cannot undo it!! The damage of my pistol basically reset to level 1 after I claimed these rewards.

I get that the studio makes money off of add revenue, but when you sacrifice your games playability to bombard people with adds, it’s a little ridiculous. When the adds pop up you’ve also got a 50/50 chance of it freezing in the add, forcing you to close out the game, which then restarts you at wave 1, super annoying when you’re almost done with the final wave. It’s nice that they let you skip the add after about 5 seconds, but you get forced into one after every 45-60 seconds. Getting surrounded by a mob but have a chance to get out? Nope, add pops up and you end up getting surrounded when it’s done. These people are leeches, don’t bother with any of their content.ĭecent concept, but it forces you into watching adds at the absolute worst moments. However, when buying the “no adds” feature what you actually do it put your hard earned money into the developers pockets and are rewarded with an increased frequency of forced adds. Sure it’s only $3 dollars, I liked the concept of the game enough to purchase it. Don’t waste your time purchasing the no adds feature.
